Retrofit funding to support 35 affordable rental homes in North Vancouver

On March 30, the federal government, announced $5 million through the Canada Greener Affordable Housing Fund (CGAH) to repair and retrofit 35 Hiy̓ám̓ Housing homes at Ocean View Apartments in North Vancouver.

The announcement was made by The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Member of Parliament for North Vancouver-Capilano, on behalf of the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada alongside Sarah Silva, Chief Executive Officer of Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society.

Significant building envelope upgrades include improving the air tightness of the building, upgrading the insulation, windows and patio doors, as well as installing Energy Recovery Ventilators, heat pumps, low flow water fixtures, and LED lighting.

Celebrating in this important milestone were Hiy̓ám̓ Housing staff and board directors, partners from the Rental Protection Fund and guests from Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation Council).

Hiy̓ám̓ Housing extends thanks and appreciation to our project partners:

  • Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)
  • Federation of Canadian Municipalities Green Municipal Fund
  • Vancity Non-Profit Housing Retrofit Program
  • Clean BC, and
  • Rental Protection Fund.

Hiy̓ám̓ Housing acquired Ocean View in April 2024, fully tenanted, and we respect each tenant’s right to continue to live in the building.

As tenants move out, we prioritize Squamish Nation members to fill the vacancies. We look forward to tenanting at least two units with Squamish People by late Summer 2026, pending the completion of planned retrofits.
