Community Update: Orwell Project at Ch’ích’élxwi7kw (Seymour) Village

Ch’ích’élxwi7kw (Seymour) Village is the future site of the Orwell Project, led by Hiy̓ám̓ Housing.

As part of our community engagement activities, we have begun sharing information with our neighbours who live nearest to the site, right next to the Phibbs Exchange, about the activities that will start soon.

To prepare for work on this development, our partners, Ventana Construction Corporation, are expected to begin clearing the land from Monday, February 9, which will last several weeks.

Driven by the values of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation, Hiy̓ám̓ Housing have engaged with community and Elders about the history of and best way to proceed with this site.

Please note:

  • An archeologist from Squamish Nation Rights & Title will be on site while work is taking place.
  • Sqomish Forestry is reviewing the site for potential trees to be transported to the log sort for storage.
  • Squamish Nation Language & Cultural Affairs have been consulted on trees for cultural use.
  • Trees that are appropriate for Longhouse use will be identified.
  • Tree clearing is scheduled to be complete before bird nesting season begins. Should tree clearing extend into bird nesting season in March, nest surveys will be conducted prior to any clearing.
  • For safety reasons, fencing and signage will be installed around the site. Cameras may also be installed around the site.

Read the full letter, shared with neighbours via hand delivery on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
